Gustav Courbet was a French painter who led the Realist movement in the 19th century. He usually painted figurative compositions, landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes. Much of his work was controversial in his time because of its examination subjects such as the rural bourgeoisie, peasants, and the working conditions of the poor. Courbet emphasized the rough handling of paint and the depiction of the harshness of life, thus challenging the contemporary academic ides of art.
