French painter that was one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. He is well known for his paintings of peasant farmers and rural life. Millet was a source of inspiration for Vincent van Gogh, especially in van Gogh's earlier works. His landscape paintings also heavily influenced Claude Monet and Georges Seurat.
