He was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman and worked with pastels a lot during the symbolist era. He was born into a wealthy family and began working with art and drawing since he was a child. He was taught by Rodolphe Bresdin in etching and lithography when he was younger. After serving in the Franco-Prussian War, he got into working with pastels and oils.
