He was a French painter who contributed work in Symbolism and Post-Impressionism. He was self-taught and was ridiculed for that until later in his life when he was actually appreciated. He was into art since he was a child and even won awards in high school for some of his drawings. He worked for a lawyer and then later the government to help pay for his bills, and because he had to support his mother later because of his father passing away.
