Piet Mondrian was a Dutch artist who helped establish the de Stijl movement with Theo van Doesburg. He developed his own style of painting within de Stijl called "neo-plasticism," which depicted bright primary colors blocked off by black bars. He described the new style by saying, "As a pure representation of the human mind, art will express itself in an aesthetically purified, that is to say, abstract form... this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour."
