School founded by the architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919 that combined crafts and the fine arts. It was founded with idea of creating a total work of art in which all arts would be brought together. It existed in three German cities: Weimar from 1919 to 1925, Dessau from 1925 to 1932, and finally Berlin from 1932 until it was closed in 1933 because of increasing pressure from the Nazi regime. The Bauhaus was well known for its different and innovative approach to design and it was this idea that permeated and changed the course of Modern Art in the 20th century.
