American painter associated with the abstract expressionist movement in New York in the 1940's and 1950's. Labeled as an "action painter" because of his intense and spontaneous style of painting. He focused more or less on the actual brushstrokes and the effect of the paint on the canvas instead of figures or imagery. Though Kline re-introduced color in 1955, his best known paintings are in black and white.
